our first responders have been doing a heroic job protecting our city and saving lives and they are still fighting fires and con ukt doing life-saving search and rescue migs and we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. the storm brought something like 23 serious fires to parts of staten island, brooklyn, queens as well as city island in the bronx. the terrible fire on breezy point is now ununder control, but we believe we lost more than 80 houses. the search and recovery operations there are ongoing. if any of you saw the pictures on television is looked look a forest fire out in the midwest. the winds were just deaf statinstatin devastating and blowing from one building to the next one. we are hoping and praying that there was no loss of life in those fires, but even we can -- even if we can save any lives, many people have lost their homes and they have our full support in the days and weeks ahead. the 76 shelters we opened will remain open today and we will continue to keep shelters open until people displaced by the storm can safely return to their homes or find temporary housing. o

you know, parking lots underneath -- you know, the first four, eight stories of buildings being parking lots may not be the prettiest thing to look at, but, but better you lose a parking lot than you lose a whole bunch of apartments or a whole bunch of business units. we're going to have to think about making our infrastructure more protectable. i mean this thing in new york is absolutely the example. our problems with metro north are absolutely the example so we'll have to harden systems and have to spend money on hardening those systems, even while we're spending money to repair those systems. now, of course, there is a bigger question. in a country where people don't like to talk about infrastructure investment, at least half the people in the country don't like to talk about infrastructure investment, how are we going to get this thing done? we'll need leadership in the country that actually doesn't simply talk about europe or china's investment in awe and then not expect to repeat it here in the united states. we need to rebuild our infrastructure. we need to harden our infrastruct

the first storm to move in to affect new york city, new jersey, the shores of maryland and delaware, that's unpreced t unprecedented. on top of that, we're going from this tropical cyclone embedded in the larger nor'eastern situation. that makes it unusual. on the back side of this storm, the tropical moisture is going to mix with arctic air. that's going to create some heavy interior mountain snow, especially west virginia. we could see several inches of snow because there's so much moisture and eventually so much cold air working into this system. this is a bizarre event. what does it mean for us? again, we're talking about those gusty winds, especially monday night. they could gust near 80 miles per hour. we're looking at perhaps a foot of rainfall. we're looking for a storm surge perhaps up to 10 or 11 feet high. this is going to create major concerns across the eastern seaboard. it doesn't really matter where you are, from southern new england all the way down into north carolina we are going to see these issues with power outages and so on as we go through the weekend. >> sandy
